This one's a bit of a drive, but I promise you it is well worth it. Tucked away in an alleyway in downtown Summerville is a true hidden gem of the Charleston bathroom scene. This bathroom is as solid as they come.
Single occupancy restrooms are kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, they obviously allow the user privacy to evacuate themselves in peace and quiet. On the other hand though, if there is any sort of a line of people waiting to use the restroom, a traffic jam of occasionally disastrous consequences is created. Fortunately, this particular bathroom is tucked away enough for this to not be a problem. In fact, I had been to downtown Summerville dozens of times before this without even realizing there was a public bathroom there at all.
This particular bathroom is no bark, all bite. It doesn't need any bells or whistles to get the job done. It doesn't need the flashiness of the Charleston Visitor's Center bathroom or the pompous bad boy attitude of the Majestic Square Garage bathroom. The Public Restroom Downtown Summerville is the strong, silent type, sort of like a Gary Cooper. Nothing stands out at first glance, but what this bathroom may lack in looks, it more than makes up for in pleasurable bathroom experiences.
The first thing you will notice is just how well-kept this bathroom is. The floors are spotless, the porcelain glistens in the sunlight; it's enough to make a grown man cry. There is so much extra toilet paper in this bathroom, you could take a roll for each of your loved ones and there would still be plenty left over.
I also noticed that they have provided one of those nifty compartments that you can stow your toddler in while you use the toilet, a welcome addition to any public bathroom.
Every public restroom enthusiast knows that the most easily damaged and defaced aspect of a public restroom is the mirror, which is why many restrooms don't even bother installing one. However, the mirror in this bathroom was so spotless I could see the crust in the corners of my eyes from ten feet away.
I would like to personally commend the hardworking public bathroom attendants in the city of Summerville, South Carolina for their tireless work. They have crafted a truly spectacular public bathroom experience and have easily put themselves in the running for Tasteful Public Toilets Bathroom of the Year.
On top of all of this, there is a historical landmark in the courtyard just outside of this restroom, but I won't tell you what it is, you have to see it for yourself.
